This is the latest Mountain Modifications project. Its a 1988 Toyota extended cab 4x4 pickup. As you can see its been pretty well trashed and rolled. The condition of the body and bed are not so important because they are going to be recycled anyways. The plan is to make use the existing frame and build a cage off it. Its going to seat 6 people. We are in the process of looking for a fwd motor and auto transaxle for it. The new motor will be rotated sideways 90 deg and mounted in the center of the buggy with each side of the transaxle running to each of the truck's differentials. The Toyota came with 4.11 gearing so running the drive train in this sequence will increase the torque 4x's. Top speed will be reduced by 4x's as well but since the vehicles main purpose is for beating up the trails we don't need high top speed anyways. This is our winter project and since its winter this one is on our high priority list to get some work in on. We will be updating this page as progress is made. Dec 4th We cleaned up the cuts and welded it back together and it turned out pretty nice! We also got some new/used stuff for it! A set of 31/11.50/15 swampers, some 7x15 steel rims with a much deeper offset, and some bucket seats. The motor and seats are in an approximate position of where they will be.
July 20th Ok its been a little while but we got the Honda stripped and gone. we also decided to shorten the Toyota frame for better maneuverability we took 21 inches out of the middle. We are also taking 6 inches of the back and 5 in of the front for better approach and departure angles. frame now looks like a more stout jeep frame.
April 13 No go on the '89, but we found our donor car! its a 95 Honda civic 1.5L EFI with 4spd overdrive. all the drive train is in running condition. It was smashed in the front and rear. We actually drove it into the shop. Jan 20 2005 The body and bed are now gone. We sold off the engine trans and transfer case now we have a little cash to put into this thing. We also have a donor vehicle headed our direction its an 89 Honda accord and it should be arriving next week some time. I pressure washed the front end to get most of the grease and grime off. more stuff to be added soon.
Oct 20 2004 We worked on the buggy Wednesday night. Dean got to try out his new saws all. we cut off the front, removed the rest of the interior and got the cab off the frame. Not too bad considering we only had a couple hrs to do it in. I got some more pics too
